It's all very tounge-in-cheek and smoke & mirrors. There is a certain kinship among the groups, and although on the surface we appeared to hate each other, some of the members in my group(s) were in part, members of the groups we were supposed to be "competing" against. I enjoyed spending time on IRC, and seeing if my group(s) could beat our "competitors" with our releases. It allowed me to sharpen my skills, and perfect my social engineering.

I have an accumen in obtaining free shit. But in my personal experience, it was really quite trivial: I can honestly say that I "ran" with plenty of people that fall into all of the categories you outlined. It would appear, that the local cops had NO FUCKING CLUE what they were looking at.Įveryone is different. We did know, however, that they had at least looked at the machine, and had given it back.
We also don't know if the guy from EGO that got busted, even knew who we were. So we don't really know what, if anything, the local sheriffs found on my friend's PC. Some of them started getting nuked, and I started to evaluate my life in a different way, and just stopped participating. I joined another MVID release group and id a few (less than a dozen) MP3 rips. She (yes our leader was a SHE) had a kid, and just didn't have the time to commit anymore. The merger lasted for about a year and a half, and then the leader of the new group also fell off. He never got invited to another group, and basically fell out of the scene. Our main "leader" took a huge leave-of-absence (definitely a smart move) and we decided to merge with one of our competing groups. No one in the group really wanted to take the risk of staying together. I was pretty certain he couldn't be logged, but what if they had gathered all this info from the logs? We got him a new drive and got his machine back on. Just get a new drive altogether and encrypt the contents this time. But, I did recommend he get a new hard drive. I don't see any strange hardware in the machine, or anything I would consider a "bug". So I go to my friend's house and look at his computer. Did they now what they were looking at? Did they alert the FBI? Did they put a keylogger on it? We were all REALLY paranoid. The sheriff had made some comments to him about what they found: "A lot of music, a lot of porn, etc". 'Bill' got his computer back, but as a group, we were incredibly on edge. Then, 2 weeks later, my friend gets a call from the local sheriff saying the investigation has concluded and the seized property will be returned. I basically just went to work and home, I didn't want to do anything that would make me vulenrable to eavesdropping or the like. I shutdown the bots, our dumpsite, and got off IRC. Tell everyone." Disoriented, I'm like WTF? Raided? What happened? He told me his brother got arrested, and I can kind of fill in the blanks. I get a call from my friend 'Bill' at like 5AM and all he says is "We got raided. This computer just happened to have mIRC on it (w/o blowfish), some un-pre'd rips, a HUGE collection of SCENE releases, IM logs, tons of stuff. They came and arrested 'Jim' and also seized ALL of the computers in the house. Abouut 2 hours later my friend's house gets RAIDED. Well Jim (my friend's brother) suspects something is up with this dude, and initially agrees, then changes his mind. I don't know how much a QP of meth is, but I know it's a lot. So Jim has a guy come over who randomly asks to buy a QP of meth. I mean EVERYONe in that house knew he was being watched by the cops, and they dismissed it. anyway, Jim is having surveilence done on him, and it's pretty well known. Jim would sell meth to people out of his brother's house (settlement money) and physcially and emotionally abuse his own brother.
So we resume our normal operations, and something incredibly coincidental, and REALLY crazy happened: my friend 'Bill' 9who is handicapped I remind you) had a brother 'Jim'. It was temporary until we decided we were safe. We had initially frozen all releases and leeching by our members (to keep our IP's from showing up in logs) for a few days. Ok, so after we had all read and seen the other guy who had been busted (I think he was from EGO, but I'm not 100% on this one) and realizing that no one knew him, or had talked to him, we should be safe to continue pushing rips. We were NOT using Blowfish at this time (fucking stupid) We were all already a bit on edge (60% of my group at this time lived in the same city) Just 2 weeks before, in our local paper, some other guy in a MUSIC release group had been busted by the FBI as part of an ongoing investigation. My "friend" that I will call 'Bill' was physically handicapped.
It's kind of long, but I think it's a pretty interesting look at the craziness that I was a part of: Ok, here's the "almost got busted & oh shit we're fucked now" story.
